The Fox sisters, undoubtedly among the most famous mediums, were two American women who lived in the second half of the 19th century. They were renowned for having ‘initiated’ the Anglo-Saxon spiritualist movement and contributed to the development of mediumship.
The birth of two mediums in Hydesville
In 1848, in the peaceful village of Hydesville, a strange and captivating story begins. Two young sisters, Margaret and Kate Fox, are at the heart of a phenomenon that will revolutionise perceptions of the spiritual world. Their house is the scene of mysterious noises, sharp clicks that seem to answer their questions. This is how they establish communication with a ‘spirit,’ that of a murdered peddler, according to them. This discovery marks the beginning of a fascination that will captivate crowds and give rise to a veritable movement, spiritualism. The sisters, thrust into the limelight, become true mediums, and their séances become highly anticipated events.
The essence of their mediumship: the manifestation of an unknown energy
What makes the Fox sisters so special is their ability to produce physical phenomena. The famous ‘raps’ are not mere noises, but coded messages, a concrete manifestation of spiritual energy. This form of physical, tangible, and audible communication is a true revolution. It offers apparent proof of the existence of the spirit and its interaction with our world. Here, mediumship is no longer simply a matter of belief, but a sensory experience. The spirit manifests itself not only through inner visions, but through a perceptible presence, thus paving the way for a new era of communication with the afterlife.
The spiritualist movement and universal harmony
Many claim that the Fox phenomenon gave rise to a major movement, spiritualism, which quickly attracted thousands of followers. The sisters were considered exceptional spiritual channels, capable of transmitting messages of love, comfort and peace. Their mediumship sessions became places of hope where people sought truth and a deep connection with the spiritual world. These messages offered consolation and harmony to those who had lost a loved one. The Fox sisters were not merely mediums; they became spokeswomen for a philosophy that advocated the existence of the spirit and the continuity of life after death.
Margaret Fox’s confession
However, the Fox sisters’ fame was short-lived. In 1888, a sensational revelation shook the spiritualist movement. Margaret Fox, worn out by a life of celebrity and addiction, confessed that the ‘raps’ were nothing more than a hoax, a simple cracking of her joints. This confession, made in front of an audience of journalists, cast doubt on the sisters’ entire career. Although Margaret later recanted, the damage was done. The doubt remained and would not go away. The idea that their mediumship might have been a hoax was now in everyone’s minds. This controversy raised fundamental questions about the nature of the spirit, energy and human credulity.
The lasting legacy: A symbol of spiritual quest and truth
Despite doubts and controversies, the Fox sisters’ legacy remains undeniable. They paved the way for the study of the paranormal and democratised mediumship, making communication with spirits a topic of social discussion. Some even go so far as to say that they are the founders of the Anglo-Saxon spiritualist medium movement, although this claim remains controversial.
Their story, whether the result of deception or a genuine spiritual gift, has led thousands of people to question life after death, the power of love, and the possibility of universal harmony. The Fox sisters will forever remain a symbol of humanity’s spiritual quest and fascination with the inexplicable.
Similarly, their history shows that charlatanism is never entirely absent from the realm of spirituality. Fortunately, our era has the necessary scientific advances and ethical approaches to more easily distinguish a competent medium from a fraud.
In practical terms, I proceed as follows: with each of my contacts, I always describe the spirit that comes to me, and if the client does not recognise it, I stop the consultation after ten minutes and offer a refund.
